Xiang Congzhi, former Party chief of Shanxi University, delivered a speech at the school's linguistics research institute on March 3.

Xiang's speech focused on three points—the significance of linguistics research, the development of humanities and social sciences in China and the requirements of scientific researchers.

"Scientific researchers must be clear about their life goals. They should equip themselves with professional knowledge, morality and precision, making reading and critical thinking a part of their daily life," Xiang said during the speech.

He also expressed his approval of the institute's recent achievements, calling the university a "guardian of national culture".
