Updated: 2017-05-05
A Chinese opera concert was staged at Shanxi University on April 30, promoting traditional opera among the faculty and students.
Jinju Opera masters Miao Jie and Xie Tao, as well as Peking Opera master Pei Yanling, gave performances among many other distinguished performers, displaying the grand charm of the traditional art form.
Traditional Chinese opera is a time-honored form of drama and musical theatre which has developed over 1,000 years in China, first maturing during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The art form has many regional branches, such as Peking Opera based in Beijing, Jinju Opera in Shanxi province and Kunqu Opera in Jiangsu province.
A ceremony celebrating the 17th anniversary of Going on the Opera Stage, a TV program produced by Shanxi Television, was held to coincide with the opera concert.
