Updated: 2019-10-16

The College of Physics and Electronic Engineering was co-founded by the Physics Faculty, Electronic Information Science and Technology Faculty, Electro-Optical Research Institute and the Theoretical Physics Research Institute in 1997. Since the establishment of the college, and after 15 years of construction, it has built an excellent platform for teaching and scientific research, and has formed a comprehensive development system for talented people.

The college has a Physics Faculty, an Electronic Information Science and Technology Faculty, an Optoelectronics Science and Technology Faculty, an Electro-Optical Research Institute, a Theoretical Physics Research Institute, a Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory and a Modern Communication Technology Research Institute. The college has 166 teaching and administrative staffs, including 131 teachers, 12 assistant teachers and 12 Party and management cadres. The teaching force consists of 34 professors, 39 associate professors and 6 senior experimentalists, which include 26 doctoral advisors and 90 postgraduate advisors. It currently has 1,060 students, including 742 undergraduates, 228 Master’s degree candidates and 90 Doctoral candidates. Since its establishment, the college has provided the society with over 10,000 outstanding talents.

The college has eight disciplines entitled for conferring a Doctorate, one post-doctoral research station, 12 disciplines entitled for conferring a Master’s degree, and two majors for a Master's degree in engineering. Among which, Optical Engineering and Information and Communication Engineering are primary disciplines entitled for conferring a Master’s degree (including two secondary disciplines). Besides, it has five Bachelor's degree programs of Physics (national base for researches on basic science and development of talents in teaching), Applied Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Optical Information Science and Technology and Software Engineering (towards electronic technology).

The college is now in possession of the National Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices and national key disciplines of optics. Theoretical Physics, along with Atomic and Molecular Physics, are provincial-level key disciplines, Optical Engineering is a provincial level key discipline under development, while Information and Communication Engineering is a key discipline under the support of Shanxi province. Besides, it also has the Engineering Research Center of Shanxi province.

Its Physics Experiment Center is a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center. Its optical and atomic physics teaching team is a national level teaching team, and the major of physics is a national level featured major. The college owns two national level excellent courses, Modern Physics Experiments and Atomic Physics, and three branded majors of Shanxi province, which include Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, and Optical Information Science and Technology. In addition, the modern physics experiments teaching team is a provincial-level teaching team.
