A delegation of members from five overseas Chinese societies in Malaysia headed by the president of Persekutuan Tiong-Hua visited Xiamen, Fujian province on March 18.

Chen Junyong, deputy director of Xiamen's Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, briefed them on the city's economic and social development.

Chen said that Xiamen has opened wider to the outside world, optimized business climate, and strived to construct a beautiful cosmopolitan city since it hosted the BRICS summit in 2017.

She hoped that overseas Chinese societies in Johor Bahru, the second largest city in Malaysia, will organize local commerce chambers and high-profile talents to conduct exchanges with Xiamen in various fields and encourage more local Chinese businesses to take part in the Belt and Road construction.

She also introduced the Tan Kah Kee Scholarship, which is aimed to attract more talented overseas Chinese students to study in Xiamen.

The Malaysian guests showed great interests in the scholarship, noting that overseas Chinese people in Malaysia love traditional Chinese culture and the scholarship offers rare opportunities for them to learn about such a culture in their homecountry.

Founded in 1922, the Persekutuan Tiong-Hua is the highest leading body of five overseas Chinese societies in Johor Bahru and is responsible for managing religious, educational and cultural activities for local overseas Chinese people.
