BISU leaders attend World Chinese Language Conference

Chang Yu, secretary of the CPC Beijing International Studies University (BISU) Committee and Zheng Chengjun, a member of the standing committee of the CPC BISU committee and vice-president of the university, led a delegation to this year’s World Chinese Language Conference (WCLC), which was held in Beijing from Dec 7 to 9.

Manuel Ivan Trejos, general-secretary of the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino), delivered a speech at the main forum. He expressed his gratitude to the Confucius Institute at the University of Panama for providing opportunities for parliament staff to learn Chinese.

He also highly praised the "China-Panama Canal Art Exhibition" and other activities held at the Latin American Parliament, which were co-organized by the Chinese Embassy in Panama, the Parlatino, BISU and the Confucius Institute at the University of Panama.

During his meeting with Chang, Trejos emphasized the good relations between the Parlatino and BISU, promised future assistance to BISU to expand cooperation with Latin American countries. The two sides agreed to deepen educational cooperation, enhance cultural exchanges and promote mutual learning.

Chang also visited BISU’s booth at the WCLC, which promotes the university’s Chinese language education.

Li Xiuling, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress and Trejos had a meeting on Dec 10, which was also attended by Chang.

Trejos said that the Parlatino has maintained a good relationship with China and is willing to work together with the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress to further deepen exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and maintain the friendship between the two peoples.

He emphasized that the Parlatino and BISU are close partners, and he said he hoped for deeper cooperation between them. Chang stated that BISU, under the leadership of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, would serve the cooperation between Beijing and the Parlatino.

Li had led a delegation to the Confucius Institute jointly built by BISU and the University of Panama in October. During the visit, they unveiled the "Beijing Cultural and Tourism Center" in Panama and attended Chinese language classes offered by Confucius Institutes at the Parlatino.

Zheng attended the ceremony for the release of the standards for "Chinese + Technical and Vocational Education and Training". He also chaired the sub-forum on "HSK Serving Medicine, Tourism and Information Technology".

Distinguished guests from Pakistan, Algeria, Singapore and domestic universities delivered speeches on vocational Chinese and Chinese learning models and training models such as "Chinese + Medicine", "Chinese + Early Childhood Education" and "Chinese + Tour Guides".

The "Chinese Language Proficiency Standard for International Tour Guides" developed by BISU’s School of Chinese was also discussed at the conference.

The 2023 WCLC, themed "Chinese for the World, Openness into the Future", is hosted by the Ministry of Education and jointly organized by the Center for Language Exchange and Cooperation, the Chinese International Education Foundation and the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching.

The conference has attracted about 2,000 participants from over 160 countries, including government officials, education authorities and renowned experts.
