The GDP of Shenzhen’s Nanshan district was 610.37 billion yuan ($86.11 billion) in 2019, according to the latest “Shenzhen’s National Economic and Social Development Statistical Bulletin”.

This signifies that Nanshan has become the first district (county) with a GDP of 600 billion yuan in South China’s Guangdong province, and has been ranked first in the province for seven consecutive years.

Last year, in the face of a complex external environment, Nanshan strove to reach the target set at the beginning of the year, resulting in several outstanding performances.

Its economy ranked first in Guangdong for size, and the district’s scale advantage was further stabilized. Nanshan has crossed the 100 billion mark for three consecutive years, accounting for 22.7 percent of the city’s total economic growth.

Its growth rate remained at middle and high levels, showing a stable trend. The district achieved a GDP growth rate of 7.6 percent in 2019.

Output efficiency has improved continuously, as has the quality of economic development. The local per capita GDP has reached 401,600 yuan, ranking first in the city’s districts, with a year-on-year increase of 3.3 percent. Nanshan produced over one fifth of the city’s GDP with about one tenth of the population and land.

The troika gained momentum with more balanced growth points, and the district’s growth rates of investment, consumption, and exports were all higher than those of the city as a whole.

In addition, the level of industrial modernization has been continuously improved, and the economic structure has been optimized.

First, the proportion of the tertiary industry achieved a significant increase to 66.4 percent. The rapid development of strategic emerging industries also realized an added value of 338.99 billion yuan, accounting for 55.6 percent of the total GDP of the district, with the growth rate as high as 14.9 percent.

In addition, the high-quality industrial and service sectors continue to thrive. Advanced manufacturing constituted 65.7 percent of the whole industrial sector, and the high-tech service industry represented 72.3 percent of the profitable service field, both higher than in the same period last year.

In recent years, the district has actively seized major historical opportunities and implemented the “Scientific and Technological Innovation plus Headquarters Economy” driving strategy, further improving its competitiveness.

Nanshan ranked first among China's top 100 districts in 2019. In the past five years, the average growth rate of GDP in the district exceeded eight percent, achieving stable growth on a high base and ranking first in Guangdong province and third in the country for the seventh consecutive year.
