The spirit of Songjia: a village's fight against schistosomiasis

Songjia village, known for its "spirit of fighting against schistosomiasis", is located in Yingtan's Yujiang district, Jiangxi province.

Schistosomiasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms, is now widely considered as the second most devastating parasitic disease after malaria.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, it killed more than 29,000 people in Yujiang in the 30 years that followed. The devastation caused by the worms meant that over 20,000 mu (1,333 hectares) of farmland was left unused, due to the lack of agricultural workers.

Yet villagers overcame adversity in a campaign against the parasite from the winter of 1955 to the spring of 1958, with locals demonstrating perseverance and considerable bravery.

Nowadays, Songjia is known for its history of schistosomiasis prevention and control. Visitors to the village can enjoy sightseeing opportunities and relaxation, as well as taking the chance to learn more about the area's difficult past.

The spirit and determination shown during the fight against the parasitic worms continues, with a huge public effort currently being made to promote rural revitalization.

Visitors wanting to learn more about Songjia's history can view various exhibits at the local exhibition hall, including schistosomiasis specimens, equipment used in the fight against the condition, and brochures on best practice for prevention and control.
