The county level city of Ruian – administered by Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang's province – has mapped out plans for "future communities" and "future villages" as pilot zones, in order to achieve common prosperity for its people.

The term future community, which was mentioned in the provincial government's report in 2019, is based on the concept of an urban development project that aims to make cities more people-oriented, environmentally friendly and digital.

As of now, two communities – Yongshengmen and Xianghe – have been approved to be provincial future community pilot zones.

With an investment of about 6.69 billion yuan ($1.04 billion), plans are for the Yongshengmen future community to be completely demolished and rebuilt. It will focus on laying out future neighborhoods, education, health and entrepreneurship to create an idyllic and aesthetic habitat.

With a total planned area of 91.8 hectares, it will accommodate 6,039 residents and introduce 422 new talent.

The project is expected to be completed in August 2023.

The Xianghe future community is expected to adopt the concept of smart operations to build a growth-oriented, healthy, safe, convenient, sports and old-age friendly smart future community. It is expected to be completed in 2022.

The concept of a "future village" is reportedly the upgraded version of the existing beautiful village construction program.

Caocun and Mayu towns in Ruian have been listed as future village pilot zones in Wenzhou.

For Caocun town, plans are to use 5G technology to energize its historical, cultural and natural resources.

With a planned investment of 1.37 billion yuan, it will undertake 30 projects to build a future village with the combination of agriculture, culture and tourism and the integration of production and village people.

Mayu town, according to its local situation, plans to build a wetland future village through comprehensive planning and an intensive transformation. With an investment of about 750 million yuan, 23 projects will be carried out.

Ruian is reportedly to build 20 future villages by 2025 – including 17 village types, two town types and a district type.
