About the Greater Bay Area

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is a city cluster consisting of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Huizhou, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing in South China's Guangdong province, which is an important step in China's building world-class city clusters and participating in global competition.

It is the 4th largest bay area in the world after the New York Bay Area, San Francisco Bay Area and Tokyo Bay Area. In 2017, the population in the Greater Bay Area reached 69.57 million and GDP hit 10 trillion yuan ($1.48trillion), accounting for 12.17 percent of the national economic aggregate. Its GDP ranks 11th in the world, making it the most economically active area in the country. 

Since 2008, the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has been continuously promoted by the central and local governments. The " Greater Bay Area Economy " made its debut in the government work report of Shenzhen in 2014.

In 2015, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed that deepening cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to build the Greater Bay Area. In March 2017, the plan of construction of the Greater Bay Area was written in the central government work report for the first time and it was upgraded to a national strategy.

In October 2017, the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China promoted mutually beneficial cooperation among Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao with the focus on the Greater Bay Area’s construction.

In January 2018, the government work report of Guangdong province proposed that the construction of the Greater Bay Area would be accelerated and the development plan would be implemented.

In March 2018, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was mentioned in the central government work report and the development plan will be released. On Feb18, 2019, the promulgation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area signified a new milestone in the development of the Greater Bay Area.

Under the framework of BRI, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao have their complementary strengths and can achieve mutual benefits, win-win results, and regional coordinated development, becoming an important fulcrum for regional competition in the world.

The goal of the Greater Bay Area focuses on enabling the public to share the benefits of its development. By promoting the construction of the beautiful Greater Bay Area and building a city cluster with quality life, the public will have more sense of well-being and happiness.
