Updated: June 30 ,2022

Recently, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) released the report of 2022 Global Sci-Tech Society Development Index. This is the first time that the report has issued the Science & Technology Society Development Index (STSDI), trying to introduce the development status of global sci-tech societies more scientifically and accurately. The report covers 3,016 sci-tech societies in over 70 countries and regions in the world. The index is based on the 3D evaluation framework of “governance, leading and influence” by using neural network algorithm and analytic hierarchy process to determine index weight.

The report pointed out that flexible organization is a new trend of strengthening the governance ability of sci-tech societies. Global top sci-tech societies pay great attention to the flexibility of their organizational structures. For example, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is trying to break its 70-year old organizational structure to make governance more dynamic, inclusive and diverse.

Digital transformation is a new opportunity for sci-tech societies to improve their ability. Global top sci-tech societies apply digital technology to energize academic journals and meetings, the transformation of products (services) as the goal to form flexible, modular, user-centered knowledge.

Network development is a new trend of sci-tech associations to increase their social influence. Top sci-tech societies in the world stress the importance of website platforms and social media, express opinions and comments on hot topics and publicizing the knowledge, spirit and progress of science in order to increase the social influence of sci-tech societies in various circles and fields.

Chinese sci-tech societies are growing steadily and have great potential for growth. In terms of comprehensive rankings, sci-tech societies of the United States and the United Kingdom have dominant advantages. However, the Chinese sci-tech societies have been in rapid development in recent years with the support of the CAST.  There is a remarkable increase in the number of the Chinese sci-tech societies to be ranked among the top global sci-tech societies. Chinese sci-tech societies have developed greatly in  terms of  internal governance and standardization of sci-tech societies and the professional operation.
