On July 13, the China University of Geosciences (CUG) sent its second expedition team to conduct scientific investigations in the headwater region of the Yangtze River, in Northwest China's Qinghai province.

The new expedition team, which is composed of 17 college students and 19 teachers, will embark on their scientific journey from Wuhan to Golmud, Yushu and the Tanggula Mountains in Qinghai on July 15.

According to Professor Li Chang'an, one of team leaders of the expedition team, the 10-day trip will take them to the Gangjiaquba Glacier in the fountainhead area of the Yangtze River, the Tuotuo River (the source of the Yangtze River) and the Ga'erqu River (one of the five largest tributaries of the Yangtze River).

The expedition team are expected to conduct systematic investigations into landforms, glaciers, permafrost, and geological, biological and ecological conditions. In addition, they will unveil a scientific research base for college students in the headwater region of the Yangtze River, participate in ecological and humanistic studies, undergo survival training in the wild at an altitude over 5,000 meters, and measure the height of the main peak of Geladandong Snow Mountain.

Zhang Yuesen, an undergraduate student of the year 2020 at the CUG, is a member of the expedition team. In addition to mastering professional knowledge and skills prospectively used in outdoor research, he has taken part in a three-month intensive training program for the upcoming scientific journey.

In an interview, Zhang said that he is looking forward to utilizing his professional knowledge, deepening his understanding and strengthening the protection of the headwater region of the Yangtze River, and to becoming an active participant and publicity worker in the overall conservation of the Yangtze River.
