Announcement for the Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the China University of Geosciences (No.1)

Updated: October 27, 2022

As an institution of higher learning with a glorious seven-decade history, the China University of Geosciences will celebrate its 70th anniversary on November 7th, 2022. We would like to invite colleagues from all walks of life and alumni from home and abroad to attend this grand gathering in the spirit of presenting academic achievements, showcasing cultural richness, and enabling cooperation.

Entrusted with the mission of geological exploration and engineering for a better motherland, this institution has always remained true to the aspiration. In 1952, the Beijing College of Geology was founded through an amalgamation of the geology departments (faculties) of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Tangshan Railway College and other famous universities. The Beijing College of Geology was recognized as a “new socialist university of science and engineering” for its undaunted aspiration to further research on geology, and its relentless pursuit of engineering craftsmanship. In 1960, the Beijing College of Geology was designated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as a national key university. Since then, the institution has been known as the Hubei College of Geology, the Wuhan College of Geology, before it was eventually established as the China University of Geosciences in 1987. Despite having undergone several reorganizations and relocations, our original aspiration remains unchanged, and the cornerstones that we laid down have endured the test of time. Adhering to the motto of “working hard with a plain living style, seeking truth with a pragmatic attitude” and the value of “seeking harmonious development between man and nature”, we are committed to cultivating talents who have lofty ambitions, morality, solid foundations, and profound expertise, and who pursue the unity of knowing and doing. Bearing our mission in mind, and striving for our cause with resolve, we have written a glorious chapter of geological achievements.

An age of unprecedented prosperity is unfolding before us, and we are sure to write a more brilliant sequel. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, CUGers have forged ahead with pragmatism and innovation. We strive hard to solve the bottleneck of resource shortages, and are determined to pursue academic excellence with extraordinary courage and selfless dedication. In 2018, our first step in achieving the strategic goal of building a “high-level university of first-class Earth Sciences with the coordinated development of multi-disciplines” was completed ahead of schedule. The disciplines of science, engineering, liberal arts, management, economics, law, education and arts have been developing harmoniously. Seven subject areas have been listed in ESI’s top 1%, among which Earth sciences and Engineering rank in the top 1‰. Since its opening in 2019, the Future City Campus has been preparing the ground for marching towards excellence and glory. For 69 years, CUG faculty’s selfless contribution and industrious cultivation have borne fruit, pooling a large number of high-level talents. We have trained more than 300,000 high-quality graduates for our country across multiple fields, including an elite group of scientists, officials, educationalists, and sportsmen. Among these graduates, 40 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering are our proud representatives. In the New Era, CUGers are forging ahead courageously in space, underground, ocean, and polar explorations, laying a solid foundation for the long-term goal of building CUG as a world-class university in the field of Earth sciences on its 100th anniversary.

Dreams and future await us as the new era brings forth new prospects. At the foot of Nanwang Mountain, natural beauty nurtures great minds, and in the Future City, there shines a galaxy of talents. CUG will continue to carry forward its fine traditions and strive for the building of “a beautiful China & a habitable Earth”. Preparations for the 70th anniversary of the China University of Geosciences are in full swing, and we look forward to our distinguished guests and alumni attending this ceremonial gathering to reminisce and marvel on a brighter future of CUG.

We hereby make this request for your kind attendance.
