Inspiring aspirations: CAST president dialogues with university students in Anhui

On Oct 23, 2023, a meeting between Wan Gang, president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and student representatives from 10 universities in Anhui province, took place at the University of Science and Technology of China. A total of 220 students participated, representing the universities, including the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei University of Technology, Anhui University, Anhui Agricultural University, Anhui Medical University.

Themed "New Era, New Youth, New Mission," the meeting provided a platform for Wan to engage in enriching discussions with the students. Topics of conversation included the role of Chinese scientists in addressing global challenges, the contributions of basic science students to China's scientific and technological development, understanding the relationship between science popularization and technological innovation, and managing uncontrollable factors in scientific research.

Wan shared insights from his life journey, covering aspects of growth, learning, and work, and offered guidance and support to the students. He encouraged the young attendees to think big, embody the spirit of scientists, cultivate a deep sense of national identity, and become the new generation of idealistic, responsible, resilient, and ambitious individuals.

A student inquired about the crucial role of Chinese scientists in tackling global challenges. Wan responded by discussing the advancements in renewable energy and photovoltaic technology and the reduction of carbon emissions in China. He urged the students to "aspire to greatness, accomplish monumental tasks, work diligently, and contribute to the country’s scientific and technological progress”.

When discussing the prospects of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in academia, Wan noted that the widespread adoption of AI signifies progress in scientific development. He emphasized the importance of critical thinking and independent research, encouraging students to read original texts, verify sources, and form their own perspectives.

Addressing the contribution of university students to rural vitalization in the new era, Wan underscored the vast potential for development in rural areas. He highlighted the significance of agricultural mechanization and electrification in technology-driven rural vitalization efforts. He advised students to rigorously study foundational knowledge and conduct experiments, as these efforts will undoubtedly lead to building thriving rural communities.

Wan also visited the History Museum of the University of Science and Technology of China and surveyed the progress of the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory.
