Advertorial

Bronze gui of Zuobo

Date: Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC)
Provenance: Excavated from tomb M242, Ying State tombs, Pingdingshan, Henan province, 1993
Measurements: Height: 16.5 cm, Mouth diameter: 17 cm, Base diameter: 13.4 cm

The vessel is elevated by a trumpet-shaped base attached to its ring foot - a unique shape for its time.

A 74-character inscription arranged in eight lines is found upon its interior base, recording a ritual archery contest that was held at the royal residence by King Zhao of the Western Zhou. Zuobo had this vessel made on account of receiving the King's favor. The inscription, itself a beautifully written record, provides invaluable material for research into ancient China's system of ritual archery contests.
