Stele of Yuan An

Date: 92 (4th year of the Yongyuan reign), Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220)
Provenance: Unearthed in Yanshi county, Henan province
Measurements: Height: 139 cm, Width: 73 cm, Thickness: 21 cm

A rare Han Dynasty stone tablet with inscriptions carved in seal script, the stele bears records of the biographical sketch of Yuan An, a high-ranking official in late Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) and the great-great-grandfather of Yuan Shao (d. 202), one of the most powerful warlords of the period. The calligraphy on this tablet of Yuan An is a variation based on the seal script of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). Influenced by the clerical script of the Han Dynasty, it changed the roundish style into a somewhat square style, which makes the characters appear free and relaxed and square in a round framework.
