With a sustainable vision and an unwavering commitment, Andes Petroleum Ecuador Ltd. and PetroOriental S.A. have not only contributed to the transformation of the oil sector in Ecuador, but have also left a positive footprint on the Amazon communities and the national economy.
The year of 2025 marks the commemoration of forty-five years of bilateral relations between China and Ecuador, signifying an important international milestone by validating the collaboration of both nations in favor of economic and social development. Chinese companies Andes Petroleum Ecuador Ltd. and PetroOriental S.A. have played a critical role in this process, promoting economic growth and community development in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
The journey of these companies began 19 years ago in the country, when these subsidiaries of Chinese oil giants CNPC and SINOPEC were established with a clear mission: to operate responsibly and contribute to the development of local communities.
Since December 12, 2018, Ecuador joined the Belt and Road Initiative, which seeks to create a global and inclusive trade and infrastructure network. Through a Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation signed by both nations, Ecuador became a strategic destination on the New Silk Roads in Latin America. This alliance has paved the way for increasing trade and infrastructure initiatives that benefit both countries, with Andes Petroleum Ecuador and PetroOriental being prominent examples of this collaboration.
Strategic investments and technological advances
In 2024, Andes Petroleum Ecuador and PetroOriental made a strategic investment more than $200 million in critical areas such as exploration, development, infrastructure, technology and security. This financial commitment allowed them to maintain and expand their productive capacity in the Ecuadorian Amazon, producing more than 12 million barrels of oil over the course of the year. The implementation of innovative technologies has been fundamental to reactivating closed wells, thus optimizing available resources and ensuring a greater operational efficiency.
Economic and social contributions
The economic contribution of these organizations is evidenced in the generation of employment, creating 525 permanent jobs in the Tarapoa Block, and 190 in the Southern Block, benefiting 715 Amazon families. Eighty-nine percent of the personnel hired to operate in that region comes from the Amazon, exceeding the threshold established by law and demonstrating their commitment to local development.
Andes Petroleum Ecuador and PetroOriental have launched initiatives to improve living conditions in local communities. In 2024, the companies distributed 4,000 school supply kits to local students and provided medical care to more than 13,700 people. These actions not only strengthen ties with communities, but also ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
The companies believe in the importance of professional development, and as such have provided 43,100 hours of training for 11,000 participants. This not only improves employees’ skills, but also fosters an inclusive and diverse working environment, backed by a gender equality plan endorsed by the relevant authorities.
Commitment to innovation and the environment
Aware of the importance of protecting the environment, the companies have implemented sustainable practices, such as reforestation using native species and the collection of PET material for reuse. These efforts not only reduce the ecological footprint of their operations, but also promote the conservation of the Amazon's renowned biodiversity.
In the realm of innovation, the past year was characterized by digital transformation. The implementation of a state-of-the-art ERP and AI-based systems has optimized its operations, improving efficiency and reducing costs.
Andes Petroleum Ecuador and PetroOriental's track record in the country is a testament to how foreign investment can be a positive force for sustainable development. As these companies continue their journey in Ecuador, their focus on sustainability, social responsibility and innovation remains steadfast, that both the country and the local communities benefit. With an eye on the future, the companies are committed to continuing to lead the oil sector responsibly and efficiently, contributing to Ecuador's economic, social and environmental growth. In a world that is increasingly seeking a balance between development and sustainability, their example is an inspiration to others in the region and beyond.
