The HCI International 2024, held in Washington D.C., announced the receivers of its Best Paper Award on July 2.

The academic paper Insight Through Dialogue: A Practical Exploration of AIGC in Cross-cultural Design Research, jointly authored by Professor Qiu Yue and Zhao Xiaoxuan, a master's student from the class of 2022 from the School of Design and Arts at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), won this award.

The HCI International Conference, founded in 1984, is one of the top conferences in the field of international human-computer interaction. The conference aims to disseminate and exchange the latest theoretical and applied scientific information in that field, covering 21 major themes, including human-computer interaction, interaction interfaces and information management, engineering psychology and cognitive ergonomics, virtual/augmented/mixed reality, artificial intelligence, cross-cultural design, design and user experience and usability, social computing and social media and intelligent transportation.

The 25th HCI International Conference was held from June 29 to July 4, 2024, in Washington D.C., attracting over 2,200 attendees from 69 countries. More than 1,500 professional papers were presented. The award rate for outstanding papers was only 1.4 percent.

Professor Qiu Yue and Zhao Xiaoxuan's award-winning paper proposed and created a new tool- Chatbot, which applies AIGC (generative artificial intelligence) to cross-cultural design research. This Chatbot can provide personalized response strategies for users from different cultural backgrounds, using natural language as the interface, generating images in real-time based on user needs, and independently carrying out research tasks.

Experimental results indicate that compared with traditional cross-cultural research methods (questionnaires and manual interviews), using this Chatbot can effectively enhance the efficiency of design research and users' cross-cultural interaction experience. It can also gather more authentic and objective user feedback.
