BIT wins the Asian runner-up in 2025 Shell Eco-marathon

The Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) Yisheng Energy-saving Vehicle Team recently finished as the Asian runner-up in Shell Eco-marathon 2025, held on Feb 8-12 in Doha, the capital of Qatar, thus breaking the team's best historical record.

The Shell Eco-marathon is a globally renowned university student eco-friendly car competition. Since it began in 1985, the competition has been dedicated to encouraging young students to enhance automotive energy efficiency, and promote sustainable transportation development through innovative design and engineering.

Student teams are required to design, manufacture and test super energy-efficient vehicles, aiming to "use the least amount of fuel to go the farthest distance" on the track, testing their innovative capabilities and practical skills in the field of new energy.

The event is often referred to as the "Olympics of eco-friendly cars" and attracts many top universities from around the world every year. At this year's event, the Asia race brought together 50 outstanding teams, nearly 600 participants, from universities such as Tongji University, Nanyang Technological University, and Qatar University, making it a grand competition of new energy vehicles.

The BIT team's "Xiao Hei" car made a stunning debut at the competition, placing second with its excellent result of 478km/m³.

BIT's Yisheng Energy-saving Vehicle Team was established in 2007, making it China's first university-based energy-efficient racing organization. The team, which is affiliated with BIT´s  School of Mechanical Engineering and Vehicle Engineering, brings together outstanding students from various disciplines. Every year, the team participates in major domestic and international energy-saving competitions, such as the Honda eco-mileage challenge and the Shell Eco-marathon with self-designed and manufactured energy-efficient vehicles, and has received numerous accolades. It is dedicated to designing and building energy-efficient vehicles with the best energy consumption ratio, responding to today's urgent energy and environmental challenges with innovative ideas.

This award marks a significant achievement that signifies recognition of the university's research strength and talent development in the field of new energy vehicles at an authoritative international event. This competition provides students with a broad platform for practical innovation and strongly promotes the continuous development of new energy vehicle technology, earning BIT a strong international reputation.
