The 30th China Daily "21st Century Cup" National English Speaking Competition Grand Final concluded in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on Nov 17. Xie Jierui, a student from the School of Information and Electronics at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), won the first prize, and Luo Qin, a teacher from BIT's School of Foreign Languages, received the excellent instructor award.

The competition aimed to promote the core socialist values and enhance the international communication skills of young Chinese students. After a series of selections including preliminary, semi-final, and provincial rounds, 350 contestants from over 30 regions advanced to the national finals.
On the national stage, Xie Jierui discussed the benefits of millimeter-wave radar for elderly people living alone, offering an engineering student's perspective on China's aging society. She envisioned creating a big data platform to aid in disease prediction and drug development, aiming to raise public awareness about health and healthy living. She proposed a "golden triangle" of AI, smart sensors, and family doctors to build a caring and warm society.
BIT's School of Foreign Languages actively provides platforms for students to showcase and enhance their skills, encouraging them to participate in various language and cross-cultural competitions. Moving forward, the school will continue exploring innovative training models to cultivate high-quality foreign language talents with international perspectives and cross-cultural communication abilities.
