A ceremony celebrating Weihai Port's container throughput exceeding a record one million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) and the launch ceremony for the 2nd jetty cofferdam took place at the Weihai Qingwei Container Terminal on Dec 22.
Weihai Port, operated by Shandong Port Group (SPG), is working to deepen strategic cooperation with the city of Weihai and strengthen local socio-economic development through port-industry-city integration. SPG has continuously delivered its port integration reform benefits since its establishment, which is expected to bolster Weihai Port's container business.
Weihai Port first opened in 1918 and took 82 years to begin transporting containers, 14 years to transport a total of 100,000 TEUs, eight years to go from 100,000 to 500,000 TEUs, and seven years to go from 500,000 to 800,000 TEUs.
Weihai Port has benefited greatly from SPG's integration reforms and has integrated with other ports in Shandong. Since Aug 6, 2019, when SPG was founded, Weihai Port has introduced 10 shipping lines and two freight trains, and its container volume has risen from 800,000 to one million TEUs over the course of just one year.
According to officials, Weihai Port is expecting to handle 1.2 million TEUs before 2021 and more than 3 million TEUs by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period. The port will contribute to SPG's construction of world-class sea ports and Weihai's socio-economic development.
