Three shipping lines -- EMC Southeast Asia line, WHL/IAL/ZIM/KMTC Vietnam line and India line – launched new container routes at Qingdao Port operated by Shandong Port Group on Jan 19, according to SPG officials in Qingdao, the port city in East China's Shandong province.

They said the three new seaborne routes will link Qingdao Port with regions and countries along the Belt and Road Initiative and with partner countries of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, a major free trade agreement between Asia-Pacific nations that was signed last November.

The number of SPG's container routes to date – excluding the latest additions -- totaled 305. Meanwhile, the current year marks the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). SPG has purposefully advanced towards its goal of building an international shipping hub and center in Northeast Asia since the start of the year, with decisive measures characterized by fast and high-quality development.

This is considered a significant outcome of SPG in implementing its new development concept, serving the new development paradigm and accelerating the construction of world-class seaports.

It is also a strategic move in seizing new opportunities arising from the signing of the RCEP, expanding its global shipping routes and helping to stabilize the international industrial production and supply chain. All these endeavors will speed up SPG's building of internationally advanced logistics hubs, serve Shandong's replacement of old growth drivers with new ones and boost high-quality development, as well as build a strong province in modern times.

Taking advantage of the newly launched shipping routes, SPG will create an all-round international transshipment channel that serves Japan and South Korea, connects Southeast Asia, links countries in South Asia and the Middle East, as well as European and American countries.

The shipping network will upgrade to a "seaward golden channel" connecting SPG with BRI countries in Southeast Asia and Middle Asia and promoting economic exchanges with RCEP partner countries.

In this context, SPG will achieve high-quality economic cooperation with ASEAN countries, accelerate its building of an international shipping hub and center in Northeast Asia, as well as comprehensively serve the new development pattern.

SPG General Manager Li Fengli said that going forwards, SPG will continue to follow its development strategy of east-west connections and land-sea linkages, so as to establish maritime cooperation with more ports and build a dynamic maritime industry ecosystem. As such, it will contribute to boosting high-quality regional economic development, building a nautical bridgehead for BRI and RCEP partner countries, as well as serving national economic growth.
