Shandong Port Group (SPG) held the port & shipping conference for smoothing out container transport in Qingdao on Aug 8, and enterprise representatives from 15 shipping companies in Qingdao attended the event. They discussed the current development of the industry, challenges and opportunities of container business, and explored new opportunities for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between ports and shipping companies.

Due to the unprecedented global changes and the COVID-19 pandemic, port and maritime industries have played a big part in global supply chain, and keep industrial chains and supply chains stable, which is crucial for port operators and shipping companies.

Over the past three years since its establishment on Aug 6, 2019, SPG has worked together with shipping companies to open 25 shipping routes, and the growth rate of the routes has set a new record, which has fully demonstrated shipping companies' recognition of SPG.

From January to June, SPG increased the number of routes by 500, setting a new record. This resulted in a rise of more than 700,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Over 21.3 million TEUs were shipped in containers, an increase of 8.3 percent from the previous year. Export slots were offered for more than 300,000 TEUs. The objective was to assist international trade businesses in overcoming obstacles, expanding their market presence, and generating more business.

After three years of efforts, SPG's berth productivity for 8,000 TEU and 20,000 TEU ships have reached 139 moves per hour and 167 moves per hour, respectively. Its leading performance in vessel productivity has won itself recognition from many shipping companies. During the handling operations of the ship SHIMIN, the Qingdao Port Fully Automated Container Terminal achieved the highest efficiency of 67.76 moves per hour for a single crane, setting a new world record for the ninth time.

Additionally, SPG has worked together with COSCO SHIPPING, EVERGREEN and other shipping companies to vigorously promote the normal operations of "hot berthing services". In the first seven months of this year, Qingdao Port independently organized 324 pairs of "hot berthing services" for container vessels, which saved over 400 hours for shipping companies in terms of the time spent at ports.

SPG plans to join forces with shipping lines to make due contributions to smoothing out and stabilizing global industry and supply chains.
