The annual cargo throughput of Rizhao Port, a subsidiary of Shandong Port Group (SPG), had exceeded 500 million metric tons as of Dec 27, a year-on-year increase of 6 percent, and hit a new record, according to information released by the mayor of Rizhao at a celebration ceremony held at Rizhao Port on Dec 27.

Li Zaiwu, mayor of Rizhao, said at the celebration ceremony that the new record is a new starting point for Rizhao Port to deepen the strategic cooperation with SPG, and is of great importance for Rizhao to promote the integrated development of the port, the industry and the city.

Li Fengli, general manger of SPG, also spoke at the ceremony and said that the group will move forward in building a modern and comprehensive shipping service system in Rizhao, and help build the city into a modern coastal city in a bid to better serve the overall development of Shandong.

Rizhao Port is currently an important energy and bulk raw material transfer base across the globe, and is now the country's largest import port for iron ore, soybeans, wood chips, logs and petroleum coke.

According to official data, the port's container throughput reached 5.8 million TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, an increase of 29 percent compared with that in 2019, ranking among the top 10 coastal ports in terms of container volume.

Currently, the port's shipping routes connect to more than 500 ports in more than 100 countries and regions, and it has opened 49 domestic and foreign trade container lines, which serve most of the coastal Chinese cities and major ports in Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia.
