The Wakayama Shimotsu Port spans across Arida city, Wakayama city and Kainan city. Located in the coastal area are a number of leading companies in the oil refining and steel industries. The harbor has become a distribution hub for those companies' raw materials as well as their products.

In addition, it has become a hub port for foreign currency exchange and regular container sea routes between it and Pusan, South Korea. It is also a hub port for regular ferry service to Tokushima.
