Weifang Port area receives 'Zero-carbon Port' certification
A ceremony was held at Weifang Port area in Shandong Port Group's (SPG) Weifang Port on March 14 to celebrate the area receiving carbon neutrality certification. The event also marked the beginning of the area's "Zero-carbon Port" plan.
This initiative is the country's first plan of its kind and the first-ever carbon-neutral certification encompassing an entire port area.
China is committed to reaching peak carbon emissions before 2030 and realizing carbon neutrality before 2060. SPG has capitalised on this momentum by actively delving into novel eco-friendly port development models, particularly in the Weifang Port area.
The strides made by SPG in promoting green and low-carbon development within the Bohai Bay Port have been remarkable. Wind turbines grace the skyline, hydrogen refueling stations are operational, and the nation's premier port-based green hydrogen production is rapidly advancing.
This progress is further underscored by a notable uptick in electric-powered port machinery, the establishment of integrated port-source-grid-load energy storage structures, and the formulation of a cutting-edge protocol for zero-carbon smart operations at general bulk cargo terminals.
Weifang Port area will roll out an array of emissions reduction measures such as deploying distributed wind power systems, fostering hydrogen vehicle usage, championing electricity as a sustainable alternative, and driving automation upgrades. Any remaining greenhouse gas emissions will be neutralized using high-quality carbon credits, solidifying the port's commitment to carbon neutrality.
