SPG's Africa route hits 4-million-ton milestone
Shandong Port Group's (SPG) breakbulk liner route to Africa has surpassed 4 million metric tons in annual throughput for the first time.
On Oct 14, a vessel unloaded Guinean cargo at Yantai Port and then headed back to Africa. This marks a 53.5 percent year-on-year increase and sets a new record since the route's launch in 2015.
This achievement reflects the route's role in accelerating the global reach of "Made in China" products and supporting overseas projects. It also highlights Shandong Port's contribution to the Belt and Road Initiative and China-Africa economic cooperation.
Yantai Port – a subsidiary of SPG – has managed high-frequency liner departures by closely collaborating with local customs, maritime safety administration, frontier inspection station, and pilot station. By integrating resources from the "Zhifu Bay Port Area + Longkou Port Area" and leveraging policies combining port, free trade zone, and bonded zone advantages, the port has enhanced operational efficiency.
The international breakbulk terminal company at Yantai Port provided tailored hoisting solutions for the China-Africa route vessel, which carried complex cargo. Digital upgrades like "smart tallying and intelligent stowage" minimized vessel port stay times while ensuring safety. These efforts earned praise from cargo owners and shipping parties, strengthening the "China-Africa express" brand.
From 2021 to 2025, the Yantai Port China-Africa breakbulk liner route grew from 1 million to 4 million tons annually. By the end of 2025, it is expected to exceed 5 million tons, solidifying its position as the world's top port for bauxite imports and China's leading port for Africa trade.
