Su Shi (1037 - 1101) was born in Meishan, Meizhou (now part of Sichuan province). His courtesy name was Zizhan and his literary name Dongpo Jushi.
Su was an erudite and foresighted scholar. Combined the perseverance advocated by the Confucians with the Taoists' belief in the non-existence of time and space and the Zenists' philosophy of treating the caprice of the world with a peaceful mind, Su Shi developed an aloof, unwavering yet positive attitude toward the misfortunes in his life.
