With the aim of exploring new models of higher education that combine the best practices of east and west, learning from the most advanced educational experiences in the world, and cultivating talents with innovative minds and international vision, Zhejiang University (ZJU) began to build its International Campus in February 2013, and was granted approval from the Ministry of Education in October 2015.

ZJU cooperated with several first-rate universities in the world in terms of comprehensive strength or individual disciplines and built joint institutes with each of them. So far, the ZJU-Imperial Joint Lab for Applied Data Science, jointly constructed by ZJU and Imperial College London, has opened. The Institute of China Studies, the ZJU-UoE Institute co-established by ZJU and the University of Edinburgh, as well as the ZJU-UIUC Institute jointly founded by ZJU and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been formally established with the Campus receiving its first freshmen in September, 2016.

The International Campus at Haining covers a land area of approximately 80 hectares and has a total floor area of 399,300 square meters.
