Two special towns in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province recently won provincial recognition, local media reported.

Special towns are home to high-performance industries and developed based on their unique strengths, said a senior official from the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

The Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone has set the goal of becoming an international high-end food industry cluster and the Majiabang Health Food Town is an important industrial development platform in the zone.

The town is aiming to build a food industry ecosystem featuring research and development, production, marketing, exhibition, and tourism.

Currently, 12 renowned food companies, including Mars, Hormel, and Kapal Api, are operating in the town.

The Jiashan Guigu Intelligent Manufacturing Town specializes in artificial intelligence and life science and is catered to returnees who start up businesses in Jiashan.

Over the past few years, the special town has invested nearly 1.12 billion yuan ($176 million) in research and development, accounting for 3.45 percent of its output value.
