Renovation of Jiaxing waterway to start next year
Renovations on the Jiaxing section of the Hangzhou-Shanghai Waterway, or Hangshen Waterway, will start next year, local media recently reported.
The waterway spans 140.94 kilometers, 92.35 km of which runs through five counties in Jiaxing.
As the economic integration of the Yangtze River Delta accelerates, there are now more large-scale ships, including container carriers, operating along the waterway, and its current transport capacity cannot satisfy the increasing delivery requirements.
The renovation project will start in Tongxiang and end at the Hongqi River, a border between Zhejiang and Shanghai. With a total investment of 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), the project will consist of the reconstruction of 17 bridges, the dismantling of three old bridges, and the establishment of three service centers and anchorage grounds to enable the waterway to accommodate 1,000 metric ton-ships.
