The container carrier Xin Ming Zhou 98 left the Zhapu port area in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province on Jan 6, marking the maiden voyage on the Zhapu-Thailand route.
The ship route will pass by Ningbo Zhoushan Port, Ho Chi Minh Port in Vietnam, and Bangkok Port in Thailand before arriving at Laem Chabang Port.
Presently, only one container carrier plies the route weekly. More ships are expected to operate along the route in the future.
With the new route, goods from Zhapu can be transported to Bangkok and Laem Chabang ports one to two days earlier than before, and this results in lower logistics costs, an improvement to Jiaxing Port's performance in container trade, and an increase in the port's overall throughput.
Jiaxing Port, a national port approved by the State Council, is the only sea port in northern Zhejiang.
In recent years, companies in northern Zhejiang, southern Jiangsu and southeastern Anhui provinces have seen a rapid increase in imports and exports with Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand and Vietnam. Jiaxing Port, which opened a direct route to Vietnam at the beginning of 2021, now has four near-sea ship routes.
