Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province performed well in protecting the natural environment last year, local media recently reported.

In 2021, Jiaxing was recognized as a national demonstration city in environmental protection, making it one of three cities in Zhejiang to receive the honor, and was rated as "outstanding" in this regard by provincial authorities.

The water quality of all centralized drinking water sources in Jiaxing are up to standard, the proportion of days with good air quality in downtown Jiaxing stood at 90.1 percent, and the concentration of PM 2.5 in the downtown area was 26 micrograms per cubic meter last year.

Jiaxing residents are more satisfied with the local natural environment, according to recent survey results from provincial authorities. In 2021, an index of public satisfaction with the city's natural environment was 87.5 points, ranking fourth provincewide.

All these achievements can be attributed to efforts made by local government.

Jiaxing renovated 301 companies with heavy energy consumption and exhaust emissions and dealt with more than 440,000 environmental problems.

It has also encouraged local residents to take part in environmental protection efforts. The city has already recruited 2,552 environmental inspectors who have discovered and fixed 4,885 problems.
