The cargo throughput of Jiaxing Port in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, reached nearly 12.11 million metric tons in the first month of the year, a year-on-year increase of 10.28 percent, according to the Jiaxing port and shipping management and service center.

The figure includes 229,600 twenty-foot equivalent units, a year-on-year increase of 46.72 percent.

The cargo throughput of Jiaxing Port via sea-river combined transportation amounted to 2.33 million tons in January, including 52,600 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 96.79 percent.

A staff member from the Jiaxing port and shipping authority said that the high level of activity at Jiaxing Port is mainly due to its developed water transportation facility.

The four container wharfs for sea-river combined transportation in Zhapu port area have undergone trial operations while the two 10,000-ton berths and one 1,000-ton berth in Dushan port area have passed their evaluations.

New shipping routes have also contributed to the increase of cargo throughput. Zhejiang Seaport Jiaxing Harbor Service Co Ltd, which handled 90 percent of the containers at Jiaxing Port, opened routes to Southeast Asia, Jinzhou, Liaoning province, and Xinyang, Henan province, in January.

In addition, Jiaxing Port has improved the utilization rate of berths and optimized the arrangement of storage yards and operation procedures.
