Tongxiang, a city administered by Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, was recently listed as a national role model in the eco-friendly development of agricultural industry by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, local media reported on Feb 28.
The city has also been recognized as a national demonstration city in straw utilization and the treatment of contaminated farmland.
In recent years, Tongxiang has ramped up efforts to manage agricultural pollution.
The city has implemented a real-name purchase system for fertilizers and pesticides and promoted formulated fertilizers for different farmers.
The city has also promoted the integration of rice and fish farming to reduce the use of fertilizers. Tongxiang currently houses 12,000 mu of farmland for both rice and fish, including the largest rice and shrimp farming base in the province.
Recycling agricultural waste is another means through which the city is embracing eco-friendly agriculture.
The city has established a sound system for the collection, storage, and transportation of straw to achieve efficient utilization, and transformed fruit tree branches and the excrement of livestock into organic fertilizers.
It has also built 112 recycling stations for the packaging of pesticides and 53 recycling stations for waste agricultural film.
There are presently 127 stations around the city that monitor the quality of farmlands.
