Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province ranked 12th in the 2022 China's emerging city rankings recently released by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Since 2010, the Economist Intelligence Unit has published an annual report on China's emerging cities based on 61 indicators including economics, population, trade, finance, logistics and education, to gauge urban development potential.
Jiaxing's high ranking was mainly due to the continued relaxation of the policy on residence registration and the economic influence of surrounding large cities.
In 2021, a total of 10 prefecture-level cities in China saw their permanent population increase by more than 50,000 people, with Jiaxing, Suzhou and Foshan ranking in the top three.
In addition, Jiaxing is a part of the Shanghai Metropolitan Area, which benefits the city in a multitude of ways.
