It was all go at Qinglin village – in Liandu district, Lishui, Zhejiang province – when it held an eye-dotting painting ceremony for a bench dragon on Feb 6.

The event brought the Qinglin bench dragon to life, a traditional intangible cultural heritage item that has lain dormant for two decades.

Crafted by over 10 heritage artisans, the 141-section bench dragon incorporates traditional techniques such as bamboo weaving, paper-cutting, and calligraphy.

Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums and gongs, the gigantic dragon paraded along a 1.5-kilometer route, greeted by thousands of enthusiastic spectators lining the streets.

The ceremony reached its climax in front of the Lingshan Temple, where the dragon's eyes were dotted, symbolically awakening the dragon. As the paint brush touched its eyes, the dragon seemed to come alive, reflecting the setting sun's radiant glow.

The tradition of the Qinglin bench dragon dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and involves over 30 intricate steps in its creation. The 141-section dragon not only preserves local heritage, but also embodies good wishes.

The evening return parade was even more spectacular, with the dragon weaving through the city's main thoroughfares, drawing blessings and admiration from onlookers.

Following the eye-dotting painting ceremony, the dragon dance team will now undergo intensive training, preparing for an even more vibrant performance at Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the first lunar month.
