Giessen is located in the northern part of the federated state of Hesse in the center of Germany. It is only a 30-minute drive from Frankfurt, the aviation and financial center of Germany.
The lively university city of Giessen is home to four colleges and universities, including the University of Giessen. It is a large public research university founded in 1607 by Justus von Liebig, known as the "father of the fertilizer industry". It is worth mentioning that the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who first used X-rays (or Röntgen rays) for medical purposes, was also born in Giessen.
According to statistics, Giessen has a permanent population of about 100,000, and 50 percent of its population is under the age of 35. It has 70,000 migrants who work and study there, coming from 148 different countries and regions. This makes Giessen a young, international, and vibrant city.
Giessen has established a high-tech R&D center to help itself stay ahead in the fields of information, biotechnology, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food, environmental protection, machinery and electronics.
