Hainan Ledong cultivates recognition of its fruit brands

Ledong, a county located in southwest Hainan Island, is well-known across the country for its tropical fruits and off-season vegetables and for being the first national modern agricultural demonstration area in Hainan.

Every year, its massive production of tropical fruit, including dragon fruit, mango, longan, pineapple and wampee, and vegetables, sell well at markets outside the island province. Good efforts in quality control and branding have made Ledong's fruit products more competitive and in the meantime have helped alleviate local poverty-stricken farmers.

The Ledong Wanzhong Modern Agriculture Industrial Park, established in August 1996, is one of the biggest agriculture developers and tropical fruit plantations in Hainan. The park owns over 733 hectares of plantations for tropical fruit and vegetables, including pineapples, cantaloupe and mango. It has a seedling center with an annual output of 20 million plants and a tropical plant research center.

Wanzhong's pineapple production demonstration base, at Jianfeng town of Ledong, has been listed as a "Standard Garden of Tropical Fruit" by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and applies standardized management in golden pineapple production. The base, with 533 hectares and 3,500 kilograms of golden pineapples per 0.06 hectare, plans to expand to 2,000 hectares and to further upgrade its industrial processing chains over the next three years.

"We don't have a problem marketing our golden pineapples. We're selling as many as we produce," said Tao Songlun, deputy general manager of Hainan Wanzhong Industrial Co Ltd. He said the company has helped improve the income of more than 200 rural households through encouraging them to grow pineapples in their own lands or work at the company's production base.
