Haikou, capital of Hainan province, signed a letter of intent on Aug 6 with San Bernardino, a US California county, to establish a sister city relationship between the two areas.

The partnership will facilitate their friendly exchanges and cooperation in trade, tourism, and education, and further deepen Haikou's opening-up.

Meanwhile, the move will facilitate the construction of Hainan's pilot free trade zone and help explore ways of building a free trade port with Chinese characteristics.

Adjacent to San Francisco, San Bernardino is the biggest county in the US with a population of about 2.1 million living in an area of more than 52,000 square kilometers. It has convenient transportation, abundant tourism resources and rich education options.

Up till now, Haikou has partnered with 36 cities in 29 countries all over the world.
