Hainan province provides good supportive policies and a strong investment environment for film and television creators, said Pema Tseden, a Tibetan film director and screenwriter, on Dec 8 during the 3rd Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF).

This is the second time that Pema has attended HIIFF. His film Balloon won a Golden Coconut Award at the 2nd HIIFF last year.

Compared with last year, the film selection of this year's HIIFF is more diverse, creating a platform for the film industry and film fans to watch films and exchange ideas, he said.

Pema also suggested that HIIFF should be in line with more international film festivals and consider holding the event in a fixed location, so as to bolster its popularity and further build its branding.

In addition, digging deep into local themes and talents is also very important for the development of the film industry in Hainan, he said.

Born in 1969, Pema is currently a member of the China Film Director's Guild, the China Film Association, and the Chinese Film Literature Association. He has earned his share of laurels from film festivals around the world since he burst onto the international cinema stage with The Silent Holy Stones in 2005, including the Best Screenplay award at the Venice International Film Festival and the Best Picture prize at the Brooklyn Film Festival.
