During the recent May Day holiday that fell from April 30 to May 4, Hainan received 1.33 million tourists and generated 1.52 billion yuan ($227 million) in tourism income, the Hainan Provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports announced on May 5.

Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and rainy weather, local outings and tours were the most popular travel trend in Hainan during this holiday. In addition, Hainan held more than 50 tourism, cultural, and sports-themed activities to stimulate people's demand for local tourism.

The popularity of rural, ecological, and camping tours continued to rise during the holiday. In the island camping area located in Wuzhizhou Island Scenic Spot in Sanya, the number of tourists increased during the May Day holiday period. People experienced colorful water sports on the island during the day, as well as joined bonfire parties and watched open-air movie screenings on the beach at night.
