Hainan province is the center of mangroves in China due to its best-developed, largest, and oldest mangrove forests. In addition, 26 natural mangrove species in China are found throughout Hainan, with more than half of the species native to the province.

Mangroves are found in 12 cities and counties along the coast of Hainan Island, covering a total area of 98,242 mu (6,549 hectares). Among them, Haikou has the largest mangrove area, with a total area of 33,094 mu, accounting for 34 percent of the province's total mangrove area. The mangrove areas in Wenchang and Danzhou are 22,438 mu and 17,294 mu respectively, ranking second and third in the province in size, accounting for 23 percent and 18 percent of the province's mangrove area respectively.

Large natural mangroves are concentrated in Haikou Dongzhai Port in the north of Hainan Island, Wenchang Bamen Bay in the northeast, Danzhou Xinying Bay in the west, as well as Xinying Bay across Danzhou and Lingao. The mangrove area in these areas accounts for three quarters of the total mangrove area in the province.

Hainan province takes the establishment of protected areas and wetland parks as an important method to protect wetland resources. To date, there are nine wetland type nature reserves in the province, including one national nature reserve, two provincial nature reserves, as well as six municipal and county-level nature reserves, with the total area of wetland type nature reserves being 10,038.47 hectares.
