The deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) and members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from Hainan province highlighted how to boost domestic consumption to strengthen the high-quality development of Hainan's economy.

The consumer market of the island province is on the road to recovery. During this year's Spring Festival holiday, Hainan welcomed over six million visitors and realized 9.3 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) of tourism income.

According to Zhu Dingjian, a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and chairman of the Mission Hills Group, promoting the cultural and tourism markets will help further expand domestic consumption. Zhu suggested issuing coupons to consumers to encourage travel between different cities and provinces.

Lyu Yan, a deputy to the NPC and deputy head of Baoting Li and Miao autonomous county, suggested mobilizing industry forces through tourism associations and cooperating with other travel & tourism operators on the island.

Ding Hui, a deputy to the NPC and mayor of Haikou, said that urban renewal projects are important for people's livelihoods. As one of Hainan's pilot cities, Haikou will continue to promote urban renewal projects in 2023.

At the same time, Haikou will continue to develop as an international transportation hub and speed up construction of affordable housing, so that all can share in the achievements of the Free Trade Port.

Over the past five years, Hainan's high-end shopping, medical care, and education have become three major driving forces for consumption. Meanwhile, duty-free sales across the island have exceeded 130 billion yuan during the last five years.
