Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital, a tertiary cardiology hospital with a building area of 49,000 square meters, was established on November 11, 1999. It has 750 beds, of which 107 are in its intensive care unit. The first president of the hospital was Professor Zhu Xiaodong, a renowned cardiologist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The second president was Professor Zhu Guoying, a well-known interventional cardiologist. The two vice-directors are Professor Su Xi, director of the department of cardiology and Professor Tao Liang, director of the cardiac surgery department. The hospital is equipped with eight surgery rooms, seven cardiovascular interventional therapy rooms, Brilliance ICT, FLASH CT and a number of advanced medical facilities.
By the end of 2016, Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital had received more than 2.6 million patients from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country and had carried out more than 242,000 heart surgeries. The cardiac surgery department had performed 54,000 heart surgeries, the top three in the country and the highest in Hubei province over the previous 14 consecutive years. The annual number of examinations for coronary CT angiography and cardiac ulthrasonography was the highest in central China and the diagnostic accuracy rate was up to 99 percent. The laboratory dept was inspected by ISO15189 in 2015. Results showed that only original imported reagents are used, allowing for international traceability.
In 2011, the hospital's Cardiac Surgery department was approved as part of the national key clinical discipline construction project. In 2012, the Department of Cardiology was approved as a national cardiovascular interventional training base, and in the same year, the hospital was qualified as a national drug clinical trial organization. In 2013, it was included in the National advanced group health system by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. In 2015, its Chest Pain Center was honored as a demonstrative center for chest pain, and in 2016, the hospital's cardiac surgery department became a standardized training base for resident doctors in Hubei. In 2017, the hospital was qualified as a clinical practice base for cardiovascular specialist nurses.
The Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital has put public welfare in a key position since it was established. It has cooperated with many social welfare funds, governmental charity departments, charity enterprises and citizens to assist impoverished heart patients, especially impoverished children with congenital heart disease. Over the past 18 years, the hospital has provided free surgeries to more than 8,400 low-income heart patients through charity projects.
