A meeting about development plans for Wuhan’s hydrogen energy and fuel cell industry was held in Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ), Wuhan, central China’s Hubei province on Jan 19.

Experts including Zhang Qingjie, president of Wuhan University of Technology, Cheng Hansong, professor of China University of Geosciences and Mao Zongqiang, professor of Tsinghua University, attended the meeting and suggested developing Wuhan into a “capital of hydrogen energy automobiles” and a “world-class new hydrogen power city”, with WHDZ as the core.

Due to it being clean and efficient, hydrogen energy has become an increasingly important new energy.

In recent years, the automobile industry has accelerated the development of hydrogen energy. Many world-famous automobile companies including Toyota, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and BMW have launched plans to manufacture fuel cell vehicles.

Wuhan has a solid foundation in the automobile industry, and has advantages in hydrogen storage and transportation.

As an automobile industry cluster in Wuhan, WHDZ is currently transforming and upgrading its traditional automobile industry, taking hydrogen energy and the fuel cell industry as the key points for developing the new energy industry.

WHDZ has attracted a group of companies representing advanced fuel cell technologies in China, such as Dongfeng Automobile, Nanjing Golden Dragon Bus, and Wuhan Troowin Power System Technology –– laying a solid foundation for building Wuhan into a “capital of hydrogen energy automobiles”.

According to the development plan, from 2018 to 2020, a leading national hydrogen energy industrial park will be built in Wuhan, featuring more than 100 companies involved in the fuel cell automobile industry, with annual output value of more than 10 billion yuan ($1.56 billion).

Also, five to 20 hydrogen refueling stations will be constructed in the city. The number of buses, commuter vehicles and logistics vehicles powered by fuel cells will number between 2,000 and 3,000.

By 2025, Wuhan will have three to five leading international hydrogen energy enterprises and 30 to 100 hydrogen refueling stations. The number of buses, commuter vehicles and logistics vehicles powered by fuel cells will reach 10,000 to 30,000, and the annual output value of the hydrogen energy fuel cell industry will reach 100 billion yuan.
