The Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, held an economic performance meeting on July 29 to discuss the zone's overall work in the first half of the year and set goals for the second half.

Data revealed that in the first six months of this year, the WHDZ saw steady economic growth, with its GDP increasing by 6 percent over the same period last year.

The added value of the service sector in the zone grew by 7.3 percent, and investment in fixed assets grew by 12 percent year-on-year.

The revenue of enterprises above a designated size in the service industry, whose annual primary business income exceeded 20 million yuan ($2.9 million), reached 7.87 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.3 percent.

Rural tourism proved successful, attracting 445,000 visitors over the course of six months and bringing in a revenue of 14.1 million yuan.

The zone introduced 44 projects, each valued at more than 100 million yuan, and signed 98.42 billion yuan in contracts, accounting for 51.8 percent of the annual goal.

Addressing the meeting, Peng Hao, director of the administrative committee of the WHDZ, said that after 28 years of development, the WHDZ has made massive achievements. However, there are still development issues as well, such as unbalanced public services and lack of environmental improvement.

The zone should focus on tackling these problems and pursuing further growth in the second half of the year in honor of the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China, Peng added.

Li Lin, deputy director of the administrative committee of the WHDZ, pointed out five key tasks for the second half: pursuing steady economic growth, attracting investment, promoting industrial upgrading, improving the business environment, and ensuring production safety.
