The Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) was named a “national sports industrial demonstration base” at the 2019 National Sports Industrial Base Work Conference held in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, on Aug 22.

Evaluations of applications for the title are done once a year. Applicants (counties, districts, and cities without districts) should have abundant resources for sports and a solid foundation for a sports industry, and the added value of the local sports industry should be higher than the provincial average.

The WHDZ is the first region in Wuhan to win the title. Hubei province currently has nine such centers, ranking sixth in China, following Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, and Shanghai.

Hoko Fitness Equipment Company, based in the WHDZ, was also named a “national sports industrial demonstration unit” at the conference.

The WHDZ is home to a number of top-notch sports facilities, including the Wuhan Sports Center, the largest sports venue in Central China.

It has held several world-class sporting events, including the World Fly-in Expo, the Badminton Asia Championships, and the FINA Diving World Cup. The 7th Military World Games will also be held in the zone in October.

Next, the zone plans to fully utilize its natural landscapes, including many mountains and lakes, and its advanced facilities, such as the Hannan General Aviation Airport and the Wuhan Intelligent Connected Vehicles Testing Field, to develop a modern sports industrial cluster featuring both competitive and leisure sports, sports training, equipment manufacturing, and outward bound activities.
