When night falls, more than 1,800 new lights will illuminate the 15-kilometer road along the Yangtze River in Wuhan, capital of Central China’s Hubei province.
The lights are meant to improve the city’s night scenery and welcome the 7th Military World Games, which will begin on Oct 18 in Wuhan.
Lights will be added to 217 roads with a total length of more than 800 km.
According to local officials, the lights are a new type of LED light that are more energy efficient and last longer than older LED lights.
“Wuhan is a major city and logistics center in Central China, so we are giving top priority to traffic safety and trying our best to improve the overall aesthetic of the city,” said Zhu Ping, director of the city’s streetlight administrative center.
The local power company also developed an intelligent streetlight management system that collects data from each light and monitors its daily operations.
Officials said the improved night scenery has spurred nighttime consumption in Wuhan. According to statistics provided by the city’s commerce bureau, both the total revenue and number of tourists participating in the night tour along the Yangtze River during the Labor Day holiday has doubled since last year.
