The first batch of certificates for the trial operation of manned intelligent connected vehicles (ICV) were issued in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) on Sept 22.

The certificates were given to Baidu, Shenzhen Haylion Technologies Co, and DeepBlue Technology (Shanghai) Co, allowing them to begin operating commercial ICVs in the area.

The National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Wuhan) Pilot Testing Zone was also unveiled the same day. It will be the largest 5G automatic driving demonstration zone in China, covering an area of 90 square kilometers.

Officials said the road for testing the vehicles is expected to be 159 km long and pass through residential and commercial areas, logistics parks, tourist attractions, and industrial areas.

A wide range of automobile-related companies are expected to begin operating in the zone, helping to build a world-class intelligent automobile industrial cluster.

To date, 20 automatic driving vehicles have been tested and more than 40 related businesses have started operating in the WHDZ.

Officials said another 36 vehicles developed by Dongfeng Motor, including logistics vehicles, road sweepers, shuttle buses, and taxis, will soon start being tested in the zone.
