An automatic driving taxi made its debut during morning rush hour in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone on Sept 23, according to local officials.

The taxi -- independently developed by Dongfeng Motor Co -- traveled 14 kilometers from the company’s headquarters to its technical center, reportedly with a stable performance.

“The vehicle independently completed each driving action, including starting up, opening the signal lights and making a turn,” said Zhu Yanfeng, chairman of Dongfeng, who took the taxi personally.

“It was also able to slow down, change lanes and avoid congestion based on its probing and computing capabilities,” he added.

The taxi arrived at the destination 18 minutes later than expected, due to the busy traffic and complicated surroundings.

“But it performed very well,” Zhu stressed.

The vehicle, named RoboTaxi, is equipped with 5G long-distance driving technology, three laser radars, eight cameras and an artificial intelligence computing system. It can run at a top speed of 70 km per hour.
